New Patch Shown To Improve REM Sleep

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a groundbreaking patch that enhances REM sleep. Known as NEUSLeeP, this noninvasive device uses ultrasound waves and electrodes to stimulate deep brain regions, helping participants reach REM sleep 43 minutes faster and stay in it 16 minutes longer on average. The findings, published in Nature Communications, show promise for both healthy sleepers and those with sleep issues.

The study involved 28 participants who reported that the patch was comfortable and safe. According to Kai Wing "Kevin" Tang, a recent UT biomedical engineering Ph.D. graduate who led the research, this is the first time deep brain regions involved in REM sleep have been noninvasively targeted while monitoring brain activity. Tang explained that the NEUSLeeP patch opens new possibilities for understanding and treating sleep disorders at home.

The patch also improved heart rate variability, an indicator of a healthy stress response, and altered emotional brain circuits, suggesting potential benefits for mood and resilience. Gregory Fonzo, assistant professor in the Dell Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, stated that enhancing REM sleep may help people better cope with stress and improve overall well-being.

The researchers plan larger trials to confirm these results and explore NEUSLeeP’s potential for treating conditions like PTSD, depression, and chronic insomnia. They are also working with UT’s commercialization unit, Discovery to Impact, to bring the product to market.
