A new housing company, Cohabs, is transforming the rental market in Washington, DC by offering "co-living" spaces. These spaces allow up to 36 roommates to share common areas like kitchens and bathrooms. The company's first property in DC, located in Columbia Heights, opened last month and features 36 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, two kitchens, and six kitchenettes. Rooms rent for about $1,600 a month.
Cohabs, based in Brussels, has purchased six buildings in DC and plans to acquire more. The company aims to provide affordable housing and combat urban loneliness by fostering a sense of community among residents. According to the Washington Post, Cohabs plans to expand rapidly, with the goal of reaching 500 beds soon.
The co-living model is not new to DC, but Cohabs distinguishes itself by owning its buildings and emphasizing community activities. Residents enjoy amenities like cleaning services, utilities, and group events, all included in the rent. The company targets young professionals and international residents, offering leases as short as three months.
Cohabs' approach combines elements of traditional group housing with modern conveniences, aiming to provide a social and affordable living experience in the heart of the city. The company is also exploring the possibility of converting office buildings into residential spaces.
