Roy Book Binder, a one-man blues fest dedicated to preserving and extending the tradition of great American blues music, brings his “Tour Bus” to central Pennsylvania on Sunday, January 7, 2018, for a 7:30 p.m. Susquehanna Folk Music Society concert at Millersburg University’s Ware Center, 42 N. Prince Street, Lancaster.

Book Binder says he has been rambling around the world for the past 45 years. In 1973 he began a partnership with the fiddler Fats Kaplin and they recorded “Git Fiddle Shuffle” that year. They performed together for three years, playing numerous concerts and recording an album. After the partnership dissolved, Book Binder began touring the country, spending 15 years in a motorhome crisscrossing the U.S. for live performances and appearing at festivals throughout Canada and Europe. In the late 1960s, he traveled with the Rev. Gary Davis. He was on stage as part of Bonnie Raitt’s East Coast Tour that included an appearance on the Grand Old Opry, which led to almost 30 appearances on Nashville Now’s Ralph Emory Show.

Roy also has toured with Arthur Big Boy Cruddup. Homesick James, Hot Tuna, and JJ Cale. He’s been featured on a PBS special and has been interviewed by Terry Gross on her “Fresh Air” radio show. He’s a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches with Jorma Kaukonen, demonstrating songs, turnarounds, chord variations, right-hand methods, and many of his own powerful adaptations and unique approaches to the blues.

Book Binder has been described as a guitar-picking hillbilly bluesman. He has released 13 albums and is listed in Blues Who’s Who by music historian Sheldon Harris.
