Americans spent a staggering $228 billion on alcohol last year, according to a report by SmartAsset. The average adult in the U.S. spent $898 on alcoholic beverages, with significant variations in spending across different states. Alaskans topped the list, spending an average of $1,250 per adult, while the state as a whole spent $675 million on alcohol. Wyoming followed closely, with adults spending $1,237 each, and the state spending $543 million overall. Colorado residents spent just over $1,200 per adult.
California led the nation in total alcohol expenditure, with residents spending approximately $29 billion. Texas, Florida, and New York also ranked high, spending $21 billion, $17 billion, and $12 billion, respectively. On the other hand, North Dakota spent the least, with a total of $478 million, followed by Vermont, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
The report, which analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, highlights the impact of cultural, social, and economic factors on alcohol consumption in different states. The spending on alcohol contributes significantly to state tax revenues, as alcohol is heavily taxed. However, it also raises concerns about potential risks, such as drunk driving.
