A public hearing was held on Wednesday (December 10) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to discuss PPL Electric Utilities' proposed rate increase. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) organized the event to gather feedback from residents about the company's request to raise rates by seven percent. The proposed change would increase the average monthly bill for a residential customer using 918 kWh from $177.01 to $189.40, generating an overall annual revenue increase of $356.3 million, or 33.4%.
Many attendees voiced concerns that they are being asked to subsidize costs for data centers, which they believe should not be their responsibility. The hearing in Harrisburg is part of a series of public input sessions organized by the PUC across the state, including in Scranton, Catasauqua, and Lancaster, with the final in-person hearing scheduled for December 18 in Wilkes-Barre.
The PUC will also hold two telephonic hearings on December 15 to further gather public input. A final decision on the proposed rate increase is expected by July 1, 2026. For more information on how to participate in upcoming hearings, visit the PUC website.
