The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall for Doughy brand chocolate chip cookie dough due to potential Salmonella contamination. This recall, classified as the highest risk level, indicates a reasonable probability that consuming the product could lead to serious health consequences or even death.

The recall involves 113 units of 12-ounce cookie dough tubs, which were distributed in 15 states, including New York, New Jersey, and California. The affected products have a "best by" date of July 4, 2026. Hudson River Foods Corp, the manufacturer based in Castleton, New York, initiated the recall on November 20, 2025, and the FDA classified it on December 5.

Salmonella, a leading cause of foodborne illness, can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting, typically appearing six hours to six days after infection and lasting up to seven days. While most people recover without treatment, the infection can be severe for young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Newsweek reports that no illnesses have been reported so far, and Hudson River Foods Corp has contacted affected customers. The FDA advises consumers who have purchased the recalled dough to discard it or return it to the place of purchase.

People magazine emphasizes the importance of the FDA's three-tier classification system, with Class I representing the most urgent recalls. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Salmonella causes 1.35 million infections annually in the U.S.

For those affected, the FDA continues to monitor the situation and advises vigilance in checking for symptoms. Anyone who suspects they have consumed contaminated dough should seek medical advice.
