South Middleton Township in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, has decided to terminate its long-standing contract with Yellow Breeches EMS after over 30 years of service. The decision, announced on Thursday (May 29), was influenced by financial issues, lack of transparency, and a lawsuit alleging negligence in a sexual assault case involving a minor, as reported by CBS 21 Local News.
Township Manager Cory Adams stated that the decision aims to improve EMS coverage with a full-time, advanced life support provider. The township plans to replace Yellow Breeches with Cumberland Goodwill EMS, based in Carlisle. Yellow Breeches EMS, which serves several municipalities including Monroe and Dickinson Townships, will cease operations 30 days after receiving written notice.
The news has left Yellow Breeches employees concerned about job security and potential delays in emergency response times. Jacquie Hower, a Yellow Breeches EMT, expressed her disappointment, noting the impact on her family and the community.
Despite the township's decision, Yellow Breeches EMS is planning to introduce intermediate advanced life support services soon. However, the township has expressed interest in seeing a merger with Cumberland Goodwill EMS, as noted by CBS 21 Local News.
