Shapiro: Violence "Not OK" Following Fire

A 38-year-old man, Cody Balmer, was arrested in connection with an arson attack on the Pennsylvania governor's residence early Sunday (April 13). Governor Josh Shapiro, his family, and guests were safely evacuated from the Harrisburg home as the fire caused significant damage, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m., and the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire quickly extinguished it. Balmer allegedly entered the residence by climbing over a fence and setting the fire. He was inside for less than a minute before evading troopers searching the area. State police commissioner Col. Christopher Paris said Balmer had "homemade incendiary devices" and described the attack as targeted, although the motive remains unknown.

Balmer has not yet been charged, but Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo plans to charge him with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. Federal charges may also be considered. Balmer is expected in court soon for a plea hearing in a separate 2023 assault case.

Governor Shapiro emphasized his determination to continue his work undeterred by the attack, stating, "If this individual was trying to deter me from doing my job as your governor, rest assured, I will find a way to work even harder." He also expressed pride in his Jewish faith, noting the attack occurred after a Passover Seder.

The FBI's Philadelphia field office is assisting in the investigation, and a security review is underway to prevent future incidents. Elected officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Pam Bondi, expressed support for Shapiro and condemned the violence.

PA Officials Respond To Governor's Mansion Fire

(Harrisburg, PA) -- Pennsylvania lawmakers are condemning the arson attack at the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg. Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis said targeting elected officials and their family members is never acceptable, and these sort of acts deter people from pursuing public service. U.S. Senator Dave McCormick said there is no room in America or the commonwealth for lawlessness, violence, and hatred. A suspect is in custody for the fire early Sunday morning, who faces multiple charges including attempted murder.
