L'Oréal has announced a voluntary recall of its Effaclar Duo acne treatment in the United States due to concerns over benzene contamination. The product, sold under the La Roche-Posay brand, contains benzoyl peroxide, which can degrade into benzene, a known carcinogen. The recall follows reports from Valisure, an independent testing lab, which found benzene in several benzoyl peroxide products more than a year ago.

The recall affects all lots of Effaclar Duo, and L'Oréal is working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove remaining units from store shelves. According to Dermatology Times, the company has been developing an improved formulation since 2024.

Benzene is linked to leukemia and other blood disorders, as noted by the American Cancer Society. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. Despite the recall, L'Oréal has not advised consumers to stop using the product, as reported by Newsweek.

The FDA has not yet issued an official statement on the recall but is conducting its own review of the contamination issue. The agency has previously addressed benzene contamination in other personal care products, such as sunscreens and dry shampoos. Dermatology Times reports that the recall is a precautionary measure, and clinicians are advised to reassure patients while awaiting further guidance.
