Warmer weather in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has led to a surge in burst pipes, keeping local firefighters busy. The Harrisburg Fire Department responded to over two dozen calls on Tuesday (January 28) as thawed water began flowing from cracked pipes. Fire Chief Brian Enterline emphasized the importance of knowing where the water shutoff is located in homes to minimize damage. "Understand that the quicker you shut it off, the less damage you have," Enterline advised.

The issue arises when frozen water thaws and escapes through cracks in pipes, a common problem during temperature fluctuations. Residents are encouraged to take preventive measures, such as keeping faucets open to allow a steady flow of water and ensuring heat circulates throughout the home. Additionally, homeowners should disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets to prevent freezing and bursting, according to local plumbing experts.

As temperatures in the Harrisburg area have been fluctuating between the upper 20s and low 30s, with nighttime lows in the teens, residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for potential pipe issues. Pennsylvania American Water has also provided tips to prevent pipes from freezing, highlighting the importance of proactive measures during cold snaps.
