Blue Ridge Beef, a North Carolina-based pet food company, has issued a voluntary recall of its 2-pound frozen log packages of Puppy Mix due to Salmonella contamination. The recall affects products distributed between August 6 and August 23, 2024, in seven states including Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. The affected lot numbers are 08/06/N25 and 08/16/N25, with UPC 854298001696.
The contamination was discovered after a litter of puppies in Virginia fell ill and the issue was reported to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the Salmonella contamination on November 27, 2024, according to Pet Age.
Pets infected with Salmonella may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only show decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. The FDA advises consumers who have purchased the recalled product to return it to the place of purchase or destroy it in a way that prevents any human or animal from being contaminated.
This is not the first recall for Blue Ridge Beef. In December 2023, the company recalled lots of its Kitten Grind, Kitten Mix, and Puppy Mix due to Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes contamination, Pet Food Industry reports.
