(Philadelphia) Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are set to meet in a potentially decisive presidential debate tonight in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event, hosted by ABC News, comes as a new Sienna College/New York Times poll shows the race in a dead heat. The debate, which will be broadcast across all networks starting at 9 pm Eastern, will not have an audience, live microphones, or written notes for the candidates.

The debate will be moderated by ABC News’s David Muir and Linsey Davis, and is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Eastern time. It will air on ABC News’s properties, including ABC News Live’s streaming online, Disney Plus, and Hulu. The Washington Post will also provide coverage of the debate beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern.

The debate will not have a live audience, according to the set of rules reviewed by The Post. Those terms had been previously agreed to before Harris replaced Biden on the ticket.

Harris, who took over the Democratic ticket in July, is still introducing herself to many Americans. A recent New York Times-Siena College poll found that 28% of likely voters still want to learn more about Harris. The debate offers a significant opportunity for Harris to fill in the gaps and take the fight directly to Trump.

Trump, on the other hand, faces the challenge of maintaining discipline and focusing on issues rather than resorting to familiar insults and gripes. His performance could potentially sway voters who aren’t part of his loyal base. Trump's team has indicated that he has been working to hone the "theatrics" of his debate performance. As reported by BBC News, Trump's advisers include Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman, and Florida Republican congressman Matt Gaetz.

The debate is expected to be a high-stakes event, with both candidates aiming to seize the advantage in a campaign that polls show is a tossup. The outcome of this debate could significantly influence the election, which is only eight weeks away.
