Pennsylvania Taxpayers Overpaid For Prescription Drugs By Seven Million-Dollars
(Harrisburg, PA) -- A new report from the State Capitol says Pennsylvania taxpayers overpaid for prescription drugs by about seven million-dollars. The report from Auditor General Timothy DeFoor shows that taxpayers in the Commonwealth were charged more than they should have been through the state's Medicaid program back in 2022. DeFoor blames the state's Department of Human Services for not tracking prices, and for not cracking down on 'spread pricing' from pharmacy benefit managers. That's when the PBMs charge an extra fee to insurance plans, which raises the price on prescription drugs. DeFoor said the PBMs are counting on no one checking their prices. He says he's made several recommendations to make sure taxpayers aren't overcharged going forward.
