State Bill Would Make Animal Sedative A Controlled Substance

(Harrisburg, PA) -- An animal sedative that officials say is showing up more in illicit drug deaths will soon become a controlled substance in Pennsylvania. Governor Shapiro is expected to sign a bill about the tranquilizer called xylazine, whose street name is "tranq." The new law would make it a crime to use xylazine for illicit purposes. The drug that has been found mixed in with fentanyl and heroin will remain legal for use by veterinarians. The measure to make xylazine a "schedule three" drug was approved by both chambers of the General Assembly last week.
