Cumberland County Agency Wants To Hike Hotel Tax

((Harrisburg, PA) -- The agency tasked with marketing Cumberland County as a tourist destination plans to ask for an increase in the county's hotel tax. The Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation would like county commissioners to bump the tax rate from the current three-percent to five-percent, which would put it in line with hotel taxes in all its surrounding counties. The agency says the higher rate would amount to nearly a 40-percent increase in fees collected through the county treasurer's office. The tax is assessed for people who stay at hotels, B-and-Bs, and other accommodations.
