Penndot's promising 81 safety improvements

PennDOT is preparing to add safety measures to Interstate 81 to prevent crossover crashes.

The interstate has seen its fair share of these types of crashes.

In the last few months, three people have died and four have been injured on a single stretch of I-81 in Cumberland County.

PennDOT is focusing on the Carlisle area, between Exit 52 Middlesex and Exit 44 Allen Road.

On Thursday, PennDOT held an informational meeting about what it plans to do about the highway in the future.

PennDOT says they will be adding cable median barriers to particular spots on the interstate. In other places there will be guardrails.

CBS-21 reports that a lot of factors go in to deciding which safety measure is appropriate, such as the width of the median and the slope of the highway.

There are several other projects happening over two construction seasons, in order to make the roadway safer.
