A court filing from a group that wants 'secede' from the Steelton-Highspire school district. The Highspire Education Coalition wants the State Department of Education to decide on the 'educational merit' of creating a new independent school district for students living in the borough of Highspire. The Coalition says they've been waiting for nearly two years for that assessment, so they've filed a petition in Commonwealth Court to order the Department of Education to move forward. The Coalition claims that Steelton-Highspire students underperform on standardized tests, the district is underfunded, and got a poor report from an audit by the State Inspector General.
