Amtrak, Rabbit and Others Update Service For Monday

Amtrak has canceled its Keystone Service until 10 a.m. on Monday (January 26) as Winter Storm Fern continues to impact travel across Pennsylvania and the Northeast.

The Keystone Service, which runs 195 miles between Harrisburg Transportation Center and Philadelphia's 30th Street Station (with many trains continuing to New York City), was suspended after heavy snow and sleet fell across central and eastern Pennsylvania on Sunday.

"Out of an abundance of caution, and in consultation with our contract meteorologists, host railroads, and local officials, Amtrak is making every effort to notify customers of service cancellations due to dangerous weather conditions," the rail service announced in an email sent Sunday evening.

The disruptions are part of a broader pattern of Amtrak service cancellations spreading across the United States as an historic Arctic outbreak drives temperatures to unusually low levels. According to Railway Supply, the extreme cold poses multiple risks to rail infrastructure, including rail contraction, frozen switches, and potential air brake system failures.

The winter weather is affecting other transportation services in Pennsylvania as well. The Red Rose Transit Authority has canceled its fixed-route bus service for Monday, with possible resumption at noon if conditions improve. Rabbittransit is also operating on a delayed schedule, with service expected to resume at noon.
