Airbnb is introducing new rules for hosts that limit the chores they can require guests to complete before checking out. Starting November 20, 2026, hosts cannot ask guests to wash and put away dishes, strip beds, start laundry, or take garbage off-site, according to Fox Business. However, hosts can still request guests to place used dishes in the sink, gather used towels, and sort trash and recycling into designated indoor bins.
The new policy aims to prevent hosts from imposing time-consuming tasks typically handled by cleaners. Airbnb's updated guidelines also prohibit hosts from discouraging the use of listed amenities, such as air conditioning, though they can ask guests to turn it off when leaving. All house rules and requests must be disclosed upfront in the listing at the time of booking, with no new requirements added later.
Airbnb will enforce these changes by flagging requests that violate the policy and emailing hosts with guidance on fixing them. Unresolved violations could result in a notice on the listing or reduced visibility in Airbnb searches. The company will consider exceptions based on property and local conditions, such as allowing hosts in bear country to request guests to use animal-proof garbage containers.
The policy generally prohibits host-imposed fines or penalties, though hosts can warn guests about potential fines from external sources like homeowners associations or local governments. Sean Rakidzich advises hosts to audit their listings and scheduled messages to ensure compliance with the new rules.
