Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has voiced strong opposition to the Trump administration's recent decision to impose new tariffs on Canadian goods. On Sunday (August 23), Shapiro criticized the tariffs, describing them as "reckless" and harmful to the relationship with Canada, one of the United States' closest allies. The tariffs, which impose a 50 percent levy on over $20 billion worth of Canadian products, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement, have sparked significant concern among state leaders.
Governor Shapiro, a Democrat, expressed his disapproval on the social platform X, stating that President Trump is "choosing chaos and cruelty" by engaging in what he calls a "reckless trade war" with Canada. He emphasized that the tariffs would negatively impact families, farmers, and small business owners in Pennsylvania, as reported by The Hill.
The tariffs have also prompted a response from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who announced that Canada would implement retaliatory tariffs starting September 8. Carney stated that Canada would match the U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers and businesses. According to Pennsylvania Capital-Star, Shapiro highlighted the potential economic impact on Pennsylvania, particularly on industries like craft brewing, which rely on Canadian imports.
In a recent visit to Fegley’s Brew Works in Bethlehem, Shapiro warned about the tariffs' effect on local businesses and consumers. He described the tariffs as a "tax" that would drive up costs at a time when many are already struggling with high prices for essentials. Shapiro urged the federal government to focus on strengthening economic partnerships rather than imposing additional costs on Americans.
Despite the criticism, the Trump administration maintains that the tariffs are necessary to counter unfair Canadian trade practices. A White House spokesperson stated that American workers and businesses have long been undermined by these practices, as reported by AOL.
