Investigation Continues Into Lancaster County Fire

Authorities are investigating the cause of a significant fire that erupted in Lancaster County over the weekend. The fire, which started on Saturday (June 13), destroyed three homes and a business on South Fourth Street in Columbia Borough. Eight people were displaced, though no residents were injured. Sadly, multiple pets perished in the blaze. The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is leading the investigation into the fire's cause, which remains undetermined.

The fire was first reported around 3:20 p.m. and quickly escalated to a three-alarm response. Over three dozen fire crews from three counties responded to the scene. Firefighters battled heavy smoke and high temperatures, which complicated their efforts. According to LancasterOnline, one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion but has since been discharged.

The fire's rapid spread was exacerbated by the construction and age of the rowhomes, allowing flames to travel quickly along the roofs. Emergency Management Coordinator Jay Barninger noted that the community provided significant support, offering water, food, and other assistance to the responders.

ABC27 reported that Joeleen Wakefield, whose childhood home was destroyed, expressed the emotional toll on her family. "Everything is gone. Our entire childhood was in that house," she said.

Efforts to assist the displaced residents are underway, with help from local churches and the Red Cross. As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on recovery and support for those affected.
