The union representing workers at Hersheypark has voted to authorize a strike after rejecting Hershey Entertainment & Resorts' latest contract offer. According to a report by WHP-TV, the union, known as Chocolate Workers Local 464, overwhelmingly turned down the proposal, marking the fourth rejection in ongoing negotiations.
Despite the strike authorization, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts has stated that it has not been informed of any immediate plans for a work stoppage. The company expressed disappointment over the rejection but emphasized its commitment to the bargaining process. A spokesperson for Hershey Entertainment & Resorts mentioned that operations at Hersheypark continue as usual, and the company remains focused on providing an outstanding experience for guests.
The union's decision to authorize a strike comes amid concerns over wages, health care costs, and retirement benefits. A federal labor mediator had worked with both parties to reach a tentative agreement, which was ultimately not ratified by the union membership. Hershey Entertainment & Resorts had hoped the agreement would be accepted, as it was unanimously recommended for ratification by the union's bargaining committee.
In a statement, the company reiterated its respect for the collective bargaining process and its willingness to continue discussions with the union. Meanwhile, agreements have already been reached for other Hershey Entertainment & Resorts properties, such as the Hershey Lodge and Hershey Country Club, earlier this year.
The potential strike could impact operations at Hersheypark, but as of now, the park remains open and functioning normally. The union's authorization of a strike grants them the power to initiate a work stoppage if deemed necessary in the future.
