A recent study by the personal finance site SmartAsset has ranked Pennsylvania as one of the least healthy states in the United States. The study evaluated all 50 states based on 10 key health metrics, including self-reported physical and mental well-being, obesity rates, smoking prevalence, excessive drinking, air quality, and sleep adequacy. Pennsylvania placed 32nd, indicating it is among the less healthy half of the states.

According to the study, Utah and Colorado emerged as the healthiest states, while West Virginia and Arkansas were ranked as the least healthy. The analysis highlights the impact of health on personal finances, noting that poor health can lead to escalating medical bills, lost wages, and diminished earning potential. Conversely, strong health correlates with greater productivity, higher incomes, and lower healthcare costs.

The data for this study, sourced from County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, is age-adjusted and self-reported for adults. It underscores the importance of addressing health issues, such as obesity, which affects a significant portion of the population. In Pennsylvania, the percentage of adults with a body mass index of 30.0 or higher is a concern, contributing to the state's lower health ranking.
