Hundreds of residents in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, returned to their homes on Tuesday (May 26) after being evacuated due to a gas leak. The incident occurred on the first block of Chelmsford Drive, where a contractor accidentally hit a gas line, leading to the evacuation of approximately 300 people.
According to WHP-TV, the gas leak was reported around 11:08 a.m., and emergency crews quickly responded to the scene. The Susquehanna Regional Emergency Management Agency confirmed that the leak was brought under control, allowing residents to return home safely. No injuries were reported during the incident.
UGI, the utility company involved, continues to work on fixing any remaining issues related to the gas line. The exact cause of the leak is still under investigation.
This event follows a recent gas leak at a Tyson Foods facility in Lancaster County, which also prompted an evacuation and required a multi-county response. In that case, contractors working on a sinkhole inadvertently ignited a small flame, leading to the evacuation.
