A woman from Columbia, Lancaster County, is suing Hershey Entertainment and Resorts after being injured by a glass panel during a Hershey Bears game at the Giant Center on June 10, 2024. Barbara Bowles claims the glass barrier, secured by a mechanical system, collapsed when two players crashed into it, resulting in cuts to her leg and foot that required stitches and left permanent scars.
The lawsuit, filed in the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas, seeks over $50,000 in damages. Bowles alleges that the company knew about the mechanical system's issues but continued to seat fans in those areas. The lawsuit references a broadcast from the game where the commentator mentioned previous problems with the glass system.
Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, which operates the Giant Center and owns the Hershey Bears, has denied the allegations. In a statement, the company said it intends to "vigorously defend against the claims." The incident occurred during Game 6 of the AHL Eastern Conference Finals between the Hershey Bears and the Cleveland Monsters.
Local21News and WGAL reported that the lawsuit includes images from the game's broadcast showing the glass panel's collapse and the aftermath of Bowles' injuries.
As the legal process unfolds, the case highlights concerns about safety measures at sports venues and the responsibilities of companies in ensuring fan safety.
