In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, a care facility employee is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a dementia patient. According to the East Hempfield Township Police Department, 30-year-old Kiara Elvir was caught on video cursing at and shoving a resident at the Magnolias of Lancaster care facility on March 19. The resident, who appeared confused and was asking for her parents, suffered a skin abrasion on her right arm.
Police documents reveal that Elvir used explicit language, calling the resident an "idiot" and telling her that her parents were dead before shoving her. The incident was recorded, leading to Elvir's arrest. She is being held on a $40,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 2 before District Judge Brian E. Chudzik.
Magnolias of Lancaster released a statement confirming that Elvir was terminated immediately after management reviewed the video of the incident. The facility emphasized their commitment to resident safety and noted that the resident involved remains safe and cared for. They also highlighted the need for a centralized registry to help senior living communities make informed hiring decisions.
The case has sparked discussions on improving safeguards for seniors in care facilities. Elvir has declined to comment, and the Lancaster County Public Defender’s office, representing her, also refrained from commenting on the case.
