A Lancaster County man, Johnathan Carmona, has pleaded guilty to a series of thefts and burglaries that occurred over three months in 2023. The 29-year-old admitted to stealing from more than 200 cars, homes, and garages throughout Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. On Wednesday (April 16), Judge Merrill Spahn sentenced Carmona to a prison term ranging from 27 to 55 years.
According to the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office, Carmona's crime spree began shortly after his release from prison for similar offenses. He targeted areas including West Lampeter, East Lampeter, Manheim, Manor, Lancaster, East Hempfield, West Hempfield, West Donegal, and Lower Swatara townships. During his spree, Carmona stole items such as handguns, chainsaws, leaf blowers, electronics, purses, and wallets. He also committed identity fraud by photographing credit cards and personal information.
The authorities stated that Carmona sold many of the stolen items online. In one instance, he stole two 9mm handguns from a vehicle in Lower Swatara Township. Despite his guilty plea, Carmona attempted to withdraw it, claiming he did not commit all the crimes.
Prosecutors emphasized the severity of Carmona's actions, with First Deputy District Attorney Cody Lee Wade highlighting his extensive criminal history. Wade argued for a lengthy sentence to ensure community safety, stating that Carmona's actions had placed stolen firearms in unknown hands.
Defense attorney Jonathan Chieppor argued for a shorter sentence, suggesting that Carmona could benefit from rehabilitation. However, Judge Spahn described Carmona's actions as "calculated, sophisticated criminal conduct," declaring him a danger to the community.
Carmona's sentence includes nearly $13,700 in restitution to his victims. Despite expressing remorse in court, Carmona's lack of remorse throughout the investigation was noted by Manheim Township police Detective Jonathan Martin. Martin, who rarely speaks at sentencing hearings, described Carmona's thefts as unprecedented in scale.
