The Mifflin County Coroner's Office has reported that Steven Larrabee, a 72-year-old truck driver from Christiana, suffered a heart attack before his vehicle crashed into the Laurel Creek Reservoir on Friday (April 17). The crash occurred around 3 a.m., and Larrabee was pronounced dead at the scene. His death has been ruled accidental.
The incident has raised significant concerns about water safety in the area. The crash released fuel and other fluids into the reservoir, which is a primary water source for Mifflin County. As a result, the Mifflin County Municipal Authority (MCMA) issued a "Do Not Drink" notice on Saturday (April 19), advising residents not to consume tap water while emergency testing is underway. According to the Lewistown Sentinel, the advisory was issued out of an abundance of caution, as no contamination has been detected in treated water.
Compounding the issue, an electrical failure disabled a key backup water source, leaving the MCMA unable to meet demand without using the potentially contaminated reservoir. Residents have been instructed to use bottled water for drinking and cooking, while non-consumption uses like bathing and laundry are still permitted.
Water distribution efforts are ongoing, with volunteer firefighters and local officials providing bottled water to residents. Testing of the water is being conducted by MCMA and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, with results expected within 48 hours. A "Problem Corrected" notice will be issued once the water is confirmed safe.
The crash has also led to temporary closures and reduced hours for several businesses and restaurants in the region. Schools in the Mifflin County School District are ensuring safe drinking water for students and staff as they resume classes.
