In response to recent gun violence, Steelton, Pennsylvania, has partnered with York County's Group Violence Initiative (GVI) to address the issue. The collaboration, initiated by Tiff Lowe, GVI's project manager, aims to curb violence through community engagement and outreach. Lowe reached out to Mayor Ciera Dent after hearing her concerns about safety, particularly for children.
The partnership introduces the "Stop That" initiative, which focuses on direct engagement with residents in affected neighborhoods. As part of this effort, community members, including public officials and organizations, will conduct neighborhood walks and engage in conversations with residents.
Steelton's Police Chief Shawki Lacey highlighted the unique challenges the borough faces, including the presence of youthful gangs and the alarming level of firepower they possess. He noted that the violence affects daily life, deterring families from visiting parks and businesses from investing in the area.
Mayor Dent stressed the need for a collective effort, stating, "This is a shared responsibility, and we take our responsibility and we do what we can." The initiative encourages community involvement alongside policing efforts to create a safer environment.
The "Stop That" initiative follows a recent shots-fired incident, which fortunately resulted in no injuries. The community event at Bailey Street Park aims to foster unity and support among residents. Lowe, who has led similar initiatives in York, expressed hope that the approach will bring positive change to Steelton.
The collaboration between Steelton and York's GVI is seen as a proactive step towards reducing gun violence and increasing community visibility. Mayor Dent and Lowe are optimistic that their efforts will create a ripple effect, leading to long-term change in the borough.
