President & CEO Of WellSpan Health To Retire

Dr. Roxanna Gapstur, President and CEO of WellSpan Health, announced her retirement on Monday (April 6). Dr. Gapstur, who has led the organization since January 2019, will continue in her role until a transition is complete. Under her leadership, WellSpan expanded from eight to 12 hospitals and more than doubled its reach from five to 12 counties across Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland.

The WellSpan Health Board of Directors has engaged Korn Ferry to conduct a national search for a new president and CEO, aiming to find a leader who will continue to advance WellSpan’s vision and strategic priorities. During Dr. Gapstur's tenure, WellSpan grew from a $2.5 billion to a $4.7 billion system, becoming a national leader in clinical innovation and patient care.

Dr. Gapstur’s leadership was marked by a strong focus on quality and safety, and she was instrumental in advancing WellSpan's genomic program, which integrates genetic insights into clinical care. Her efforts also paved the way for educational partnerships, including collaborations with Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine and Jersey College’s School of Nursing.

WellSpan's achievements under Dr. Gapstur include receiving the John M. Eisenberg National Patient Safety Award and the American Hospital Association’s Quest for Quality Prize. The organization maintained an AA bond rating for seven consecutive years, showcasing strong financial stewardship.

Joe Crosswhite, chair of the WellSpan Health Board of Directors, praised Dr. Gapstur, saying, "Roxanna is a nationally respected leader who has positioned WellSpan for long-term strength." Dr. Gapstur expressed pride in WellSpan's accomplishments, stating, "The work we do at WellSpan has always been about people—our patients, our team members, and the communities who trust us with their care."
