A planned demolition at the historic Broad Street Market in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is scheduled to occur this week. City officials have announced that a 30-foot section of an exterior wall, located at the southwest corner of the market near Capitol and Verbeke streets, will be removed. The demolition is part of ongoing safety and stabilization efforts, as the wall has been identified by engineers as bowing and sagging, presenting a structural concern.

According to Harrisburg city spokesperson Mischelle Moyer, the demolition is "targeted, intentional, and limited in scope," and has always been part of the broader stabilization and redevelopment plan for the market. "The safety of residents, visitors, and workers is our top priority," Moyer stated, emphasizing the importance of addressing structural issues early to protect the market's future.

The Broad Street Market, a cherished community asset, was heavily damaged by an electrical fire in July 2023. Reconstruction efforts began in late 2025, and the current demolition is a crucial step in the market's restoration process. The city has assured the public that the demolition will not affect its commitment to preserving the market's historical significance.

The city will provide additional updates as stabilization efforts continue. The exact date of the demolition has yet to be announced. For more information, visit the PennLive, TheBurg News, and Local 21 News websites.
