Pennsylvania Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan interrupted a House Republican press conference led by Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday (November 5), urging a bipartisan approach to resolve the ongoing government shutdown. The event, held on the Capitol steps, marked the 36th day of the shutdown, making it the longest in U.S. history.
During the press conference, Houlahan called on Johnson to collaborate with leaders from both parties to address the shutdown. She emphasized that Johnson is "the Speaker for the whole House" and should engage with Democratic leadership to find a solution. Johnson responded by telling Houlahan she should "respect free speech" and invited her to discuss the matter in his office. A Capitol Police officer approached Houlahan but stepped back after she identified herself as a member of Congress.
According to The Hill, Houlahan expressed frustration over the lack of serious discussions with Democratic leaders to reach a compromise. She criticized the administration for being "completely untrustworthy" and accused Johnson of "dividing the American people unnecessarily." Johnson, in turn, accused Houlahan of regretting her vote, which she denied, insisting on the importance of unity and collaboration.
The government shutdown began after Congress failed to agree on federal funding, with Republicans pushing for a "clean" stopgap measure and Democrats demanding negotiations on healthcare, particularly the extension of ObamaCare subsidies. The shutdown has led to a halt in funding for food aid programs and paychecks for air traffic controllers.
The press conference occurred after Democrats secured significant victories in recent elections, which some believe have strengthened their resolve in the ongoing negotiations. The shutdown continues as both parties remain at an impasse over fiscal year 2026 spending levels.
