Cody Balmer, the man accused of firebombing the Pennsylvania Governor's Residence in April, is set to appear in court Tuesday (October 14) for a plea hearing. Balmer, 38, faces charges including attempted murder, aggravated arson, and terrorism for allegedly attacking Governor Josh Shapiro's home while he and his family were inside. Fortunately, the family escaped unharmed, but the historic residence suffered significant damage.
The attack took place on April 13, and Balmer was arrested shortly after. He made a 911 call to confess to the crime, citing his opposition to Governor Shapiro's views on the war in Gaza as a motive. Balmer's mother has stated that her son struggles with mental health issues, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and that she had sought help from authorities prior to the incident.
The fire prompted an independent security review of the Governor's Residence, leading to upgrades such as taller fences, new guard booths, and increased patrols. These repairs and enhancements have cost over $6 million in public funds.
Balmer's plea hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the Dauphin County Courthouse before Judge Deborah Curcillo. He previously pleaded not guilty and waived his preliminary hearing and arraignment. The district attorney and public defender's offices have not commented on the nature of the plea hearing.
