Mechanicsburg’s First Homicide in 20 Years Moves Toward Trial

Mechanicsburg, PA — August 8, 2025

The quiet borough of Mechanicsburg is grappling with its first homicide in over two decades, as the case against Richard King Jr. heads to trial following a preliminary hearing.

King, a former employee of the Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas, is charged with criminal homicide in the death of 35-year-old Zachary Gula. The shooting occurred on July 13 at a residence on East Marble Street. King was found sitting beside Gula’s body in the front yard when police arrived2.

According to police affidavits:

  • King claimed he shot Gula after being “attacked.”
  • Officers observed no injuries on King.
  • A trail of blood led from inside the home to the yard.
  • A handgun was recovered from the residence4.

The victim, Zachary Gula, was reportedly invited to the home, and investigators believe the two men knew each other. The exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation.

Due to King’s employment with the county court system, the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office recused itself, citing a conflict of interest. The case has been handed over to Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday’s office4.

King remains in custody at Cumberland County Prison without bail. His formal arraignment is scheduled for October 272.

Mechanicsburg Police Chief Robert Glenny confirmed this is the borough’s first homicide in over 20 years. The incident has shaken the community, which is known for its low crime rate and close-knit neighborhoods.
