Crash That Damaged Historic Bridge Under Investigation

Authorities in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, are investigating a crash that severely damaged the historic Neff's Mill Covered Bridge. On Wednesday night (May 27), a box-style truck struck the portal end of the bridge, causing extensive damage to its timber framing, roof components, and sidewalls. The truck continued driving for about a mile before a bystander stopped it.

The West Lampeter Township Police Department reported that the driver likely ignored signs prohibiting trucks on the bridge and failed to observe height restrictions. The bridge, built in 1824 and last renovated in 2018, remains closed indefinitely as Lancaster County Facilities Management and engineers from the Lancaster-based firm Rettew assess the damage. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured, but the truck's roof was completely torn off.

The bridge will remain closed until further notice. The police investigation is ongoing, and they are considering the possibility of charges against the driver for failing to obey traffic signs.
