Investigators have identified a possible motive behind the tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township, Pennsylvania, on Saturday (February 22). The gunman, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, was reportedly upset over the perceived lack of care his family member received in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before passing away last week. According to police, Archangel-Ortiz entered the hospital armed with a semi-automatic handgun and zip ties, targeting the ICU where he had previously visited for his family member's medical needs.
During the incident, Archangel-Ortiz held several staff members hostage and engaged in a shootout with police. Tragically, West York Borough Police Department Officer Andrew Duarte was killed, and five others, including two additional officers, were injured. Officer Duarte had recently celebrated his 30th birthday.
Authorities confirmed that Archangel-Ortiz was killed during the confrontation. The injured individuals, including a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian, are in stable condition.
York County District Attorney Tim Barker stated that the attack appeared to be targeted at the ICU. A physician assistant at UPMC Memorial, Lestor Mendoza, had informed Archangel-Ortiz about his loved one's death days before the shooting. Mendoza expressed sorrow for the violence and extended condolences to Officer Duarte's family.
Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Officer Duarte, who was commended for his bravery and service. The investigation is ongoing as authorities review surveillance footage and gather statements from those involved.
