Khalid Mumin Steps Down as Pennsylvania Education Secretary

Khalid Mumin, the Secretary of Education for Pennsylvania, has announced his resignation effective December 6, 2024. Mumin, who was appointed by Governor Josh Shapiro in 2023, will be leaving his position to take on a role outside of state government. He will be joining the Goldie Hawn Foundation as chief of strategy/education partnerships and global development, according to a spokesperson for the foundation. The foundation provides a social and emotional learning program, MindUP, to schools.

During his tenure, Mumin oversaw significant achievements in the state's education system, including an increase in funding for K-12 public schools by $1.5 billion over the last two budgets and the provision of free breakfast for 1.7 million public school students. He also played a key role in the resolution of a decade-long litigation over the state's public education funding formula, which resulted in a new formula that drives more funding towards the least adequately funded school districts.

According to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, Angela Fitterer, the Executive Deputy Secretary of Education, will serve as interim secretary following Mumin's departure. Fitterer has a 25-year career in state government, serving in former Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration, as legislative director for the education department, and in crafting public policy in the House and Senate.

Mumin, a Philadelphia native, began his career as a teacher and has served as superintendent of the Reading School District and the Lower Merion school district in Montgomery County before being appointed as Education Secretary.
