Additional FBI Documents From Trump Assassination Attempt Sought

A Congressional task force is requesting additional information from the FBI regarding the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump that took place in Butler, Pennsylvania in July. The task force has asked for documents and interview transcripts related to the investigation, specifically those concerning local law enforcement in Western Pennsylvania. They have also requested transcripts of interviews with the immediate family of the gunman, Thomas Crooks, and members of the Clairton Sportsmen's Club.

The assassination attempt occurred during a rally on July 13, where Trump was shot and injured. The FBI is treating the incident as an assassination attempt and potential domestic terrorism. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, acted alone according to the investigation so far, and there are no current public safety concerns. The FBI is still working to determine the motive for the shooting and is examining the shooter's telephone for further evidence. The firearm used in the shooting was purchased legally, and Crooks was not known to the FBI prior to the incident (FBI.gov).

The bipartisan Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump, led by U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly and ranking member Rep. Jason Crow, has set a deadline of September 24 for the requested documents and interviews. The task force is also requesting a member-level briefing on the assassination attempt by September 20 (Cranberry Eagle).
