>>Former Broad Street Market Manager Charged

Tanis Monroy, the former executive director of the Broad Street Market in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has been charged with access device fraud and theft by unlawful taking. The 31-year-old from Carlisle is accused of using the market's credit card for personal expenses and issuing unauthorized bonuses to himself, totaling around $17,000.

Monroy served as the market's executive director from October 2022 until his resignation in February 2024. At the time of his departure, he cited health reasons. However, new board members who took over in January 2024 discovered several unauthorized transactions during a review of the market's finances.

According to WGAL, Monroy allegedly used the market's credit card to pay for personal expenses such as Uber rides, food, heating service calls, and a self-storage unit. These charges amounted to about $11,937. Additionally, Monroy is accused of submitting and receiving $7,200 worth of unauthorized bonuses last year and this year.

Yahoo News reports that the charges were filed after an investigation by the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office. Since Monroy's departure, the Broad Street Market Alliance has implemented several new financial controls to prevent unauthorized transactions and improper expenditures.

The market now has a new banking partner, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, and has instituted dual signatory requirements for checks. Board meetings have been opened to the public, and every financial transaction is posted online on a monthly basis.
