Homeless Advocates Speak Out Against City Tactics At Riverfront Park
(Harrisburg, PA) -- Residents and homeless advocates are criticizing city officials who are removing people living at Harrisburg's Riverfront Park. They spoke out at Tuesday night's city council meeting saying the sweeps are cruel and dehumanizing because city leaders aren't providing alternatives. Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams says the city is working with the Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness to help people there, but also contended that the homeless campers "have to want to work with us, too." Advocates are demanding that the city install portable toilets at the park and also want it to be maintained by city cleaners.
