The Voices of Palmyra presents their annual Spring Concert, “Americana” – A Collection of American Composers, on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 3 PM at Church of the Redeemer, UCC, 500 West Chocolate Avenue, Hershey. The program features songs written by American composers ranging from the classics to show tunes.
William Billings, an early American composer, wrote ‘Chester’ which was to be the National Anthem but it was never voted on by congress. This selection is unique for its 6 part harmony.
The chorus will feature two Randall Thompson’s works, ‘The Testament of Freedom’ and ‘Frostiana’. The first is passages from the writings of Thomas Jefferson of which the group will do two movements. The second is seven country songs by Robert Frost.
The program also includes ‘Sure On This Shining Night’ by Morten Lauridsen, and two selections from “Porgy and Bess”, music and lyrics by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin.
Traditional American music such as ‘Shenandoah’ and several spirituals are included in this collection of American composers.
Dr. Michael Wojdylak is the musical director with Jennifer Leonard as the accompanist.
