>Over 2,000 Pigs Rescued From Barn Fire
(York County, PA) -- Over two-thousand-pigs were rescued from a barn fire in York County Sunday night. Firefighters said the pigs were trapped inside a barn in East Hopewell Township that went up in flames at around seven p.m. Crews arrived at the scene and were able to put the blaze out within 20 minutes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Last evening at 1812 hours Station 54 and mutual aid units on the first alarm assignment were alerted to the area of Rambo Road and Glessick School Road for a reported barn on fire. Chief 54-1, Chief 54-2, Rescue Engine 54, Engine 54, Truck 54, Tanker 54, Brush 54-1, Brush 54-2 made the response. Units were advised by York County 911 they were receiving multiple calls and a column of smoke could be seen several miles out.
Units arrived to find a 200’ x 100’ barn fire fire showing from side Alpha and through the roof. The barn was holding 2,100 pigs inside. Crews from Station 54 & Station 77 (Alliance Fire and Rescue) went to work extinguishing the fire and evacuating the pigs trapped in the building. Crews had the fire under control in about 20 minutes of arrival. Due to quick actions 2,050 out of the 2,100 pigs were saved and the farmers moved them to a new barn for safe keeping.
Units cleared the scene and were ready for service by 2100 hours. Thank you to all mutual aid companies for assistance.
