Pennsylvanians Favor Stricter Fracking Regulations, Poll Reveals

A recent poll suggests that Pennsylvanians are open to stricter regulations on fracking, despite being divided on the practice itself. The poll, conducted by the Ohio River Valley Institute and Upswing Research & Strategy, surveyed 700 likely voters across the state. The results revealed that over 90% of respondents support measures such as requiring fracking companies to disclose all chemicals used, improving air monitoring near fracking sites, and increasing the distance between fracking operations and schools.

The poll also found that 80% of respondents support classifying fracking fluids as hazardous materials. However, a majority of Pennsylvanians (58%) oppose a complete ban on fracking. Sean O’Leary, a senior researcher with the Ohio River Valley Institute, described Pennsylvanians as being 'deeply ambivalent' about fracking. He noted that residents are concerned about the noise, pollution, and potential health risks associated with the practice, but also recognize its economic contributions.

The poll's findings align with previous surveys showing mixed views on fracking among Pennsylvanians. A 2022 survey by Muhlenberg College found that 48% of those polled supported fracking, while 44% were opposed.

Despite the health and environmental concerns associated with fracking, Pennsylvanians remain divided on the role of natural gas in the state's energy future. The poll found that while 51% of respondents believe Pennsylvania should invest in renewable energies like wind, solar, and nuclear instead of fracking, 58% still view fracking as an important part of the clean energy transition.

The poll's findings suggest that while Pennsylvanians recognize the economic benefits of fracking, there is widespread support for greater regulation of the industry to mitigate its environmental and health impacts.
