Reading City Council President Donna Reed is calling for financial accountability from both presidential campaigns following their visits to the city. Reed's demand comes in the wake of a visit by Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz last week and ahead of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's scheduled speech tomorrow. Reed is requesting a detailed cost breakdown of the events and proof that billing invoices are being sent to both campaigns.
Reed expressed her concerns during a council meeting on Monday, stating that the public has a right to know how much additional security for these candidates is costing the city. "We do have a former president coming to town on Wednesday, and security is critical, and our police force plays a role," Reed said.
Reed is asking for proof that billing invoices are being sent to both campaigns and wants to see receipts that the money is paid. She emphasized that the city's citizens deserve to know that any money spent on protection needs to be reimbursed.
Reed has requested that the administration supply the council with written statements about the costs of both campaign stops by next Monday. Managing Director Jack Gombach agreed to provide the requested information.
Reed also warned residents that traffic will likely be a significant problem in the downtown area for Trump's visit on Wednesday.
