>>AM Radio Act Approved by House Committee

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has passed a bipartisan bill, known as the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, which mandates the inclusion of AM radios in all new vehicles manufactured in the United States. The bill, sponsored by Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-Fl.), and Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), was approved by a 45-2 vote on Wednesday (September 18) and will now proceed to the full House for debate.

The legislation was introduced in response to several auto manufacturers, including Tesla, Ford, BMW, and Mazda, deciding to exclude AM radios from their latest models. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has been a strong advocate for the bill, arguing that AM radio provides an essential service, particularly in times of emergency.

The bill stipulates that the Transportation Secretary must implement the law within two to three years, following consultations with the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. According to a statement from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the bill is seen as a victory for public safety, with lawmakers highlighting the crucial role AM radio plays during natural disasters.

However, the bill has faced opposition from some lawmakers who argue that it represents an unnecessary federal mandate and could increase costs for the auto industry. Despite these concerns, the bill was passed by the committee and will now move forward to the House for further consideration.
