Zuckerberg: Biden-Harris Admin "Pressured" Facebook To Censor Americans

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has admitted in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee that the Biden administration pressured the social media giant to censor certain content, including posts related to COVID-19 and the New York Post's coverage of Hunter Biden's laptop ahead of the 2020 election. The billionaire tech mogul expressed regret for complying with the administration's demands and assured the committee that Meta has implemented policies to prevent similar instances of censorship in the future.

In the letter, Zuckerberg detailed how senior administration officials leaned on the company to censor certain posts about COVID-19, including humor and satire, and expressed frustration when Meta resisted. "I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it," Zuckerberg wrote. "I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction — and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens again."

Zuckerberg also expressed regret for Meta's downplaying of content related to the New York Post's coverage of Hunter Biden ahead of the 2020 election. "It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story," he wrote.

The White House defended its approach to COVID-19 information in a statement, emphasizing that it encouraged responsible actions to protect public health and safety. The statement also noted that the administration believes tech companies should consider the effects their actions have on the American people while making independent choices about the information they present.
