City of Harrisburg Investigates Nazis Carrying Swastika Flags In City

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) — The City of Harrisburg says the mayor and police commissioner are aware of a masked group carrying flags with swastikas on them downtown, and it's under investigation.

In a Facebook post made Saturday afternoon, the city denounced the group, saying in part:

The City of Harrisburg condemns these individuals in the strongest terms. Our city is one of love and peace, and their message of hate is not welcome. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

City councilwoman and former 10th Congressional candidateShamaine Daniels took to social media to warn residents.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) — Around 30 individuals gathered on the steps of the Harrisburg capitol building Sunday to peacefully protest a group of what the city referred to as 'neo-Nazis carrying swastika flags' through the area yesterday.

Vivian Streste, a woman at the protest, told us she first found out about the group when her boyfriend spotted them on the capitol steps Saturday.

She said she feared for his safety.

"He called me at home and I literally broke into tears worrying whether or not my friend was going to be hurt by these people because they were making very intimidating remarks about certain race groups and inappropriate comments to people on the street," said Streste.

The city released a statement Saturday saying hate has no place in Harrisburg and they condemn the actions of the neo-Nazi group.

Protestors today told us that they want Harrisburg to continue to be a place of love and acceptance for everyone.

To the group yesterday, Streste said, "Stay out of Harrisburg-- nobody wants you to be here."
