Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to announce her vice-presidential pick today at a rally at Temple University in Philadelphia. The event, scheduled to take place at the Liacouras Center after 5:00 p.m., will mark the first appearance of Harris with her running mate. The campaign has stated that the choice will be announced to supporters online before the rally.
Speculation has been rife over Harris' VP pick since President Biden dropped out of the race on July 21. The fact that today's event is being held in Pennsylvania has fueled speculation that the pick will be Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Shapiro, currently serving his first term as governor, has previously held the position of Pennsylvania's Attorney General and is a former Montgomery County Commissioner with strong ties to the Philadelphia area. He has also heightened his national profile over the last few years by being a staunch advocate for the Biden administration and Vice President Harris. He is popular across Pennsylvania, even among some Republicans.
Other potential running mate choices include Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Harris and her running mate will embark on a "Battleground State Tour" following the announcement, with stops planned in Detroit, Phoenix, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Raleigh, North Carolina.
Meanwhile, Republican Senator and vice-presidential nominee JD Vance is also appearing for a rally in Philadelphia today at the 2300 Arena on Swanson Street at noon.
