Pediatricians Warn Against Rapid Rise In Tongue-Tie Surgery

(Itasca, IL) -- The American Academy of Pediatrics is warning against a rapid rise in tongue-tie surgery. The Academy looked at studies done in the U.S., England and Canada and found an almost ten-fold increase in tongue-tie diagnosis between 1997 and 2012 and another doubling between 2012 and 2016. They say most of the time surgery to cut a band of tissue near the bottom of an infant's mouth so it can latch on better during breastfeeding is unnecessary. They're recommending that doctors approach tongue-tie cases by consulting first with lactation experts and speech pathologists.
