Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) reported a significant increase in road accidents over the Memorial Day weekend. According to data released on Wednesday (May 29), troopers responded to 756 crashes during the four-day period, resulting in six fatalities and 181 injuries. Of these incidents, 46 crashes were attributed to impaired driving, one of which was fatal.

The PSP also made 467 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In addition, they issued 28,036 citations, including nearly 8,000 for speeding, just over 1,000 for failing to wear a seat belt, and almost 200 for driving children without safety seats.

The data represents a significant increase from the previous year, with 105 more crashes, 39 more injuries, and two more deaths. However, the number of arrests and citations were down from 2023, with 80 fewer DUI arrests and nearly 1,000 fewer citations.

The fatal crashes occurred in various locations across the state, including Derry Township, Westmoreland County; Clinton Township, Lycoming County; Straban Township, Adams County; Mahoning Township, Carbon County; and Clifford Township, Susquehanna County
